A 1966 Porsche 906 racer, recently showcased on Bring A Trailer, stands out as one of the roughly 50 units manufactured for the FIA Group 4 race in its singular production year.
Originally procured straight from the Porsche factory by hill-climb maestro Joseph “Sepp” Greger, this vehicle boasts a rich racing legacy. Under Greger and subsequent racers, the 906 clinched class victories in 12 of 14 European Hill Climb Championship events and continued to compete in German hill climbs until 1968.
Despite undergoing three ownership transitions, countless races, and a significant crash in 1971, the car’s legacy persisted. Post-crash, it transitioned from a standard coupe to a spider layout, took on the Macau Grand Prix in 1973, and was eventually acquired by a collector only to be disassembled in the late ’80s.
Changing owners multiple times, the 906 landed in New York by 2003. Here, the then-owner orchestrated a comprehensive restoration led by Gunnar Racing, with insights from the original driver, “Sepp” Greger. The rejuvenation process spanned about three years, reverting the body to its initial coupe design, painting it in the classic Signal Red, and equipping it with a Type 901/20 flat-six engine. It later journeyed to the UK, where it was outfitted with a 2.3-liter Type 901/06 flat-six built by Florida’s 901 Shop, complemented by triple-throat Weber carburetors.
Acquired by its present guardian in 2021, the 906 now graces the Gruppe P Collection Part II, complete with its supplementary Type 901/20 engine, a detached MOMO Monza steering wheel, historical documentation, and a pristine North Carolina title.
This 906’s captivating design, distinct from its 904 predecessor, owes its existence to a change in FIA GT regulations during its production year, resulting in a tubular space frame, a stark departure from the 904’s box-section frame.
As of now, with four days remaining, the auction has attracted 18 bids, with the lead bid standing at $855,000 USD. For a deeper dive or to partake in the auction, visit Bring A Trailer’s official website.
